Well yes I really hope so that it will stay "controlled"... And You are right that it must be some kind of subdivision, but what Im afraid of that later on it can be much harder to find data on web. I dont know maybe Im too retro, but having all that emerging data, cross-linking, technorati, tags, trackback, digg etc. usualy comes to some confusion... Or it would be nice to have some consortium like W3C just in terms of guidelines for implementation and usage... I haven't read Gibson (or Sterling) since High School (10 years ago). I don't think that the web in reality will ever reach the AI levels that Gibson foresaw. He and Sterling were visionary in a lot of ways, but technology has light years to progress before reaching the points that they wrote about. Looking at the immediate future, I do foresee the subdivision I spoke of, and a certain amount of overlapping, but self-consciousness is only acheivable in a metaphorical sense. By that I mean that the only consciousness that the net will ever have is that of it's constituent users. By the way, I found your blog through random wanderings on Technorati. If You have read Sprawl trilogy, then You must have noticed that purpouse of any self consciousness entity in matrix would like to merge with other to achieve greater enlightment(e.g. Wintermute AI). Now, why is that? More self consciousness? And it will lead to where? Ultimate entity that will controll everything that surrounds it? God??!! Not likely. Will it achieve the size of Aleph(Monalisa Overdrive). And even if it did where beyound that it will spread??? More aleph's, more emerging, more consciousness... and upto what point? I think it's important that the web look good, but that the right amount of emphasis is placed on information delivery and content. Google is NOT a pretty site, but it's responses are well ordered and easy to read. And the sheer volume of the web is akin to NYC, things get so big that it subdivides itself into burroughs and eventually into self sufficient neighborhoods (e.g. Wiki's). If web 2.0 can streamline the process of searching the various indexes of information to direct a search to a more specific venue, then the web will actually be informative. An information overload doesn't provide accurate information with any consistency to anybody.
